Career Prep Program
The Career Prep Program is an employment program developed to help private sector employers create employment opportunities for post-secondary students in their last year of study. An employer receives a temporary wage subsidy to hire, mentor and provide full-time employment for a student. Post secondary students have the opportunity to apply their education and training in a workplace. The work experience should better prepare the student to move into the workforce after graduation.
Who is eligible to participate?
If you are hiring a post secondary student in their last year of study we can subsidize 50% of the wages up to a maximum of 52weeks (16 weeks of full-time employment to a maximum of 40 hours/week, followed by 36 weeks of part-time employment to a maximum of 10 hours/week during the final year of the student’s post secondary program).
Eligible employers include:
• Registered private sector businesses
How do I apply?
You must complete the Career Prep application form for employers and submit it to your local SkillsPEI office. A Program Officer will contact you within a few days to discuss your needs.
To be approved we will need:
• Completed Career Prep application form
• Detailed job description including job duties, education requirements and timelines for the new employee
• The contact information for the new employee
When is my application due?
There is no deadline for applications under the Career Prep Program as we accept applications on a year round basis.
How does the program work?
Once you submit your completed application package, SkillsPEI will review your application. Once you receive confirmation that your application has been approved for the Career Prep Program your new employee can start work.
SkillsPEI will reimburse you for 50% of the new employee’s wages during the subsidy period. The maximum wage rate eligible for consideration is $18.00/hr. The wage rate needs to be within the wage range for the targeted occupation.
You are responsible to cover the mandatory employment related costs including CPP, EI and Vacation Pay. You also need to ensure there is proper Worker’s Compensation coverage for the participant.
